How to Build a Website Yourself: PART I - Using Free Open Source Software

These days everyone is looking for ways to save money. Well, for those of you who have plans and or a desire to put up a website in the near future, this series of articles will show you how you can save a sizeable amount of money using the same software that many freelance web developers as well as large web development companies use to create high quality professional websites. Oh, and did I mention that its Free?

These articles are intended for anyone building any type of website. Whether you are just wanting to put up a simple informational site with a few content pages or if you want to build a full ecommerce website to sell merchandise or services. And you don't need any programming knowledge or experience whatsoever. In fact, even if you foresee the need to have some custom functionality on your site that will require you to hire a programmer, using the information in these articles to build out the layout and content of your site ahead of time will still save you a great deal of money as you will only have to hire a programmer to do what this software does not already do. And there is a good chance that what you may be thinking you will need to hire a programmer for is already available to be plugged into this program. I will talk more about that later in the series.

Now a little about me. I have been working as a freelance programmer/developer for several years now. And you may be asking yourself why would this guy be willing to teach others how to build their own website rather than try to sell those same people his web development services? Well there is several reasons for this.

  1. I've seen a lot of people who would like to have put up a website for their small start up business but decided not to simply because they did not have the budget to hire a web developer.
  2. I'm usually hired by larger companies who have the need for some custom functionality specially designed for their company needs. So the building out of layout, content and basic functionality does not really cut into my area of expertise.
  3. I have a strong desire to spend more time in a more educational role, like providing the type of information that you are reading now.
  4. I also have a few open source projects that I would like to work on myself that I have just never really had the time to devote to while I was stamping out websites.

So if you have the need and or desire to learn how to build professional websites yourself without spending hundreds or even thousands of dollars on expensive software and or developers then follow this blog as I teach you how. I will be writing this series of articles as time permits and will hopefully have them completed within the next couple of weeks.
