For anyone else that also does this you know that after you submit your free entry you are redirected and presented some sort of offer from one of their advertisers/Partners. Well today I was shocked when I was redirected to one of the very same scam sites that I decribe in the other articles here on this blog.

The scam site is datamoneyonline.com It has a slightly different look and layout to the site but it is the exact same scam with the only other difference is they steal more money from you and quicker.

When you search through there Terms and Conditions page for the hidden charges you find that after 24 hours they will hit you for $197 PLUS $47 every month thereafter.

I can not believe that a big name like Publishers Clearing House has partnered with these low life scum bags who are out to rip people off!

I have notified PCH about this and will report back here with their response (if any). In the mean time, make sure you warn everyone you know about this. When a big company like PCH partners with these crooks it make them look legit when they are not. And if PCH does not remove them after it has been brought to their attention, then they are just as guilty for the crimes that their advertisers commit.

Related Articles - Scam Warnings

Make Money on Twitter Scam

I just ran across a website using the exact same scam as the Google Bizkit scam but this time it is for Twitter.

See my article on the Google Bizkit Scam if you haven't already: http://rressler.blogspot.com/2009/06/consumer-alert-google-bizkit.html

This one charges $2.97 for their "Trial Period" and then hits your bank account and or credit card for $89.90 per month.

US financial market bailout tab hits $4.7 trillion

Ok, I just read this story on Yahoo:

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/us_meltdown_oversight

And the following statement in the above story got me to thinking: But you can't use just any website template. You must use a template that was specifically designed for use with Joomla (in our case Joomla 1.5).

There are Three basic components to a Joomla template. The index.php file, the css file, and the image files that are used by the template. Since this series of articles is intended for those who have no programming experience, I won't bore you with the technical specifics of these files as these are not required for you to install and use Joomla templates.

If you do a Google search on "Joomla 1.5 templates" you will find plently of both Free and commercial templates to choose from. Once you find a template that you want to use download it to your local computer. All of the files will be zipped up into one zip file. You don't even have to unzip this file before installing the template to your site. You will be installing the zip file directly to your site through the Joomla admin side of your site.

Now login to your Joomla admin by going to http://your.site/administrator and enter the username and password that you chose during your Joomla installation process.

Once you have logged in you will notice a top menu bar with the following options: Site, Menus, Content, Components, Extensions, Tools, and Help. Place your mouse over the "Extensions" menu option and a drop down menu with more options will appear. Click on the first option entitled "Install/Uninstall".

On the screen that comes up you will see a box that says "Upload Package File". Click on the "Browse" button in the box and a window will open up for you to browse to the template file that you had previously downloaded to your computer. Locate the zip file for your template and click the Open button. The popup window will close and the path to the file will be inserted into the install box. Now click on the "Upload File & Install" button.

After the file has been uploaded and Installed successfully, go back up to the top menu bar and put your mouse over the "Extensions" menu option once again, but this time click on the "Template Manager" option in the drop down menu.

On the screen that comes up you will see a list of all the templates currently installed within your Joomla site. Find the template that you just installed and click the radio button to the left of the template name. Now in the upper right hand corner of the screen, click on the Yellow Star button that says "Default".

Now go to the front end of your site http://your.site and you can new see that your new template has been applied.

Keep in mind that even after you have added the content to you site (which I will guide you through in the coming articles), changing the layout and graphics will be easy. You will simply change the template that the site is using.

Next Article in this series: PART V - Adding Content
Previous Article in this series: PART III - Getting Started

How to Build a Website Yourself: PART III - Getting Started

Ok, before we can start building our website, we are going to need a place to build and host the site. For this you are going to need a hosting account somewhere. In my previous article I mentioned that I would be showing you how to install Joomla automatically from within your hosting account. So you will need to choose one of the several hosting providers that have this feature built in.

The one I use for my own sites as well as my clients sites is HostGator. I have another article on this blog where I go into more detail as to why I chose this company titled...Choosing a Hosting Provider for your Website. Your hosting account and domain name registration is going to be the only things you will have to spend any money on. Fortunetly HostGator is not only one of the best hosting providers out there, they are also one of the cheapest. I would recommend you start out with their "Hatchling" account which is their cheapest plan. You can always upgrade your account later on if you need to. If you choose to pay month to month then the price is $8.95 per month or you can prepay for up to three years and get the price down to $4.95 per month.

If you have a domain name in mind to use for your website then you can register that at the same time that you set up your hosting account. If you have already registered a domain name then you will be able to set that up to be pointed to your hosting acount while you are setting that up as well. If you don't not know what you are going to use for a domain name yet, that's ok. You can set up your hosting account without a domain name so you can start building your site and they will give you temporary a URL. Then later on after you decide on a domain name you can go back in and register and point it to your account.

After you have your hosting account setup at HostGator then you need to install Joomla on your site. I think you will find this step to be surprisingly easy.

First, you need to go into your cPanel for your site. You access this by going to the URL for your site followed by "/default.html". So if you have a domain name already on your account it will be <stronghttp:>http://your.domain/default.html or if you are using a temporary URL then it will be something like http://your.ip.address/~username/default.html. A pop-up window will appear for you to login with the username and password you chose when you set up your hosting account.

Once in the cPanel, scroll down to the section entitled "Software/Services". In this box look for a Blue Smiley face icon labeled "Fantastico De Luxe" and click on it. On the screen that comes up you will see a list down the left hand side of the page listing all of the free software programs that you can install with an automated install program. You will notice that there are alot of them. You can explore the other programs later but for right now I want you to find the link for "Joomla 1.5" under the Content Management heading. You may also see a link that just says "Joomla", this is for an older version of Joomla and you don't want that one.

Click on the "Joomla 1.5" link and you will be guided through a short install wizard that will install the program and database to your site. Just accept any default values in the wizard. Pretty much the only place you will have to make any decisions is when you are asked to choose and enter an email and password for the administrator. This will be used to login to the administration side of your Joomla site.

Now you have a fully functioning Joomla website installed and you are ready to start entering content and setting up the layout and graphics for your site, which I will guide you through in the following articles.

You can access the administration side of your Joomla site by going to your domain name followed by "/administrator" and logging in with the email address and password that you choose during your Joomla installation process.

In the next article I will be explaining some of the more common areas in the admin that you will be using.

Next Article in this series: PART IV - Layout and Graphics
Next Article in this series: PART II - What is Open Source?

How to Build a Website Yourself: PART II - What is Open Source?

Before we go any further I want to talk about the Open Source approach to software development so that you can have a clear undertanding of just how valuable and powerful Open Source software can be. To do this, let's do a comparison between the commercial approach to software development and the Open Source approach.

First the Commercial Approach.....

Let's say I have a software company and I want to create a program to sell to the public. First I am going to have to hire a few programmers (unless I am going to program it all myself), either way this is going to take a large investment of time and money. So to protect that investment I will have to invest even more time and money into programming security measures into the program to prevent it from being cracked and put up on the internet for free download. And no matter how much time and money I spend on this step...eventually, it will be cracked (probably by some 12-14 year old kid in his bedroom) and will be put out there for people to get for free rather than purchase it from my company.

Now let's look at the disadvantages to the end user with this approach.

First of all the power and functionality of the program is going to be limited to the knowledge and experience of the few programmers who have created it.

Secondly, for the program to continue to be useful for more than a short period of time, it will have to be continually updated and reprogrammed to keep up with today's rapidly evolving technologies industries. That means that not only will the programmers who created it have to work very hard on expanding their knowledge base but it will also require an ongoing additional investment into the program which will depend on how much money the program is making in sales. And if the program has made it to the stage of being cracked and put up for free download, this will greatly decrease the sales profit from the program.

Now the Open Source approach...

Open Source programs (or projects) are typically created and maintained in a collaborative effort between several programmers. And more importantly the source code for the program is opened up to any programmer in the world that would like to contribute to the program...thus the name "Open Source".

This presents a huge advantage over the commercial programming approach in that the programs usefulness is not limited to the knowledge and experience of just a handful of programmers. Any programmer who recognizes a need in the program can create an extension to be plugged into the original program.

This will also allow the program to continue to evolve and grow only a long period of time with new features and functionality always being added.

Now there are free Open Source programs out there for just about anything that you want to do. What we are wanting to do is create websites. So what we need for that is a CMS (or Content Management System). There are several popular CMS programs available but for the purpose of these articles I will be talking about a program called Joomla. This is my favorite CMS program because it is easy to get up and running very quickly even if you are not a programmer and have never built a website before. While at the same time it is a very powerful program that can be used to create very complex sites.

The advantage to using a CMS program like Joomla is that all of the content data for your site is stored in a database rather than just having a site built from static HTML pages. So you will be able to completely change the layout and all of the graphics for the site with the touch of a button without having to touch the data at all. Your site will be able to dynamically rebuild the page layout and graphics around the content data in your database.

You can learn more about Joomla at the official Joomla site http://www.joomla.org/. I will be talking about different sections of their website later on in this series of articles. But don't worry about reading up on how to install the program because I will be showing you how this will be done automatically for you from within your hosting account in the next article so you want be doing a manual installation.

Next Article in this series: PART III - Getting Started
Previous Article in this series: PART I - Using Free Open Source software

How to Build a Website Yourself: PART I - Using Free Open Source Software

These days everyone is looking for ways to save money. Well, for those of you who have plans and or a desire to put up a website in the near future, this series of articles will show you how you can save a sizeable amount of money using the same software that many freelance web developers as well as large web development companies use to create high quality professional websites. Oh, and did I mention that its Free?

These articles are intended for anyone building any type of website. Whether you are just wanting to put up a simple informational site with a few content pages or if you want to build a full ecommerce website to sell merchandise or services. And you don't need any programming knowledge or experience whatsoever. In fact, even if you foresee the need to have some custom functionality on your site that will require you to hire a programmer, using the information in these articles to build out the layout and content of your site ahead of time will still save you a great deal of money as you will only have to hire a programmer to do what this software does not already do. And there is a good chance that what you may be thinking you will need to hire a programmer for is already available to be plugged into this program. I will talk more about that later in the series.

Now a little about me. I have been working as a freelance programmer/developer for several years now. And you may be asking yourself why would this guy be willing to teach others how to build their own website rather than try to sell those same people his web development services? Well there is several reasons for this.

I've seen a lot of people who would like to have put up a website for their small start up business but decided not to simply because they did not have the budget to hire a web developer.

I'm usually hired by larger companies who have the need for some custom functionality specially designed for their company needs. So the building out of layout, content and basic functionality does not really cut into my area of expertise.

I have a strong desire to spend more time in a more educational role, like providing the type of information that you are reading now.

I also have a few open source projects that I would like to work on myself that I have just never really had the time to devote to while I was stamping out websites.

So if you have the need and or desire to learn how to build professional websites yourself without spending hundreds or even thousands of dollars on expensive software and or developers then follow this blog as I teach you how. I will be writing this series of articles as time permits and will hopefully have them completed within the next couple of weeks.

Next Article in this series: PART II - What is Open Source?

UPDATE - Google Bizkit - What to do if you are a Victim.

I have been reading alot of different stories from other people who have also been victimized by this scam. And I have learned that it can be even worse than what happend to me if you do not act immediately once you realize that you have been scammed.

The people running this scam will tell you that you "agreed" to the monthly charges even if you did not know about them. They will claim that what they are doing is legal because even though the monthly charges are hard to find unless you are looking for them, they can be found on the site with some effort. This is NOT true. You can not legally charge someone for anything that was not CLEARLY and PROMINENTLY disclosed before the purchase comittment was made.

Think of it this way...it would be like if you went into Wal-Mart and somewhere in the store (maybe up above the batteries in automotive) there was a little bitty sign with tiny letters that said..."By purchasing anything from any dept. in this store you are also agreeing to be billed $79.90 a month for the rest of your life for the honor of being one of our customers." And then when you challenged it you would be told that "well we disclosed those terms to you on a sign that was clearly posted in the store". Sounds ridiculous doesn't it? Well what these people are doing is the exact same thing and you do NOT have to put up with it or accept it.

Not only can you get your money back that has been stolen already but you need to move to protect yourself from them stealing any more of your money. Some people have made the mistake of accepting the scammers story about this being legal and then simply cancelling their membership to avoid further charges.

By doing this you are basically going up to the criminal who just stole your money and asking him nicely to please not steal any more of your money. If you let them get away with it the first time, don't believe for a second that they will not hit you again. Remember that your credit and or debit card number is now in the hands of a criminal who just stole your money.

If you have been hit by this scam...Read the steps below and if you have not already taken these steps to protect yourself...do so immediately.

Step 1:

If you paid using a Debit Card...go down to your bank and explain to them what has happened and tell them that you did not authorize these charges. Tell them that you want the charges reversed and you want your debit card canceled and a new one issued.

If you paid using a Credit Card...call your credit card company and tell them that you want the charges reversed because you did not authorize them and you want your credit card canceled and a new one to be issued.

This will prevent any further charges being made to your credit and or debit card.

Step 2:

File a formal complaint with your state's Attorney General's office. In many states this can be done online from your state's website.

Step 3:

Contact the hosting company where the site is being hosted and tell them what happened and demand that they shut down the web site immediately.

Even if you have not fallen victum to this scam, if you come across any of these wesite's, please contact the hosting company where it is being hosted and demand that the site be shut down.

I will be working on compiling a list of these sites with the contact email for there hosting companies and post it to this blog to make it easy for everyone who would like to help fight this repulsive scam. Follow or subscribe to this blog and check back for updates. Believe me, I'm just getting started...:)

Step 4:

Contact everyone you know and give them the URL to this blog so that they will not be the next victim of this scam.

If I can get enough people who have been victimized by this scam I will look into organizing a class action lawsuit and post that information to this blog so be sure to subscribe to this blog if you would be interested in participating in that so you will be notified when I have that information available.

The reason that this scam is so rampid on the internet is because it is going unchalleged. So I thought I would share some of my experiences for those who may not know where to begin.

First of all the "cheapest" is not always the best. Many times you get what you pay for. There is nothing more frustrating than spending alot of time building out a website and then taking it live only to see your site down most of the time because your hosting company sucks and then have to move the site and transfer your domain over to a new company hoping they will be better.

On the other hand hosting services is a very competitive industry so there is no reason to pay to much either. The goal is to find a reliable host with the most features at an affordable price.

Now many years ago when I first started out in web programming, I used a company called CrystalTech because they were referred to me by another web developer that I knew at the time. At the time I was new is this business so I didn't really do alot of shopping around. I was with them for several years then a while back the company changed owners and with that the reliability dropped as well as the convenience of most of their features in their Control Panel. And when I started looking around for other hosting options I discovered that I had been paying way to much for what they had to offer. So I would not recommend them to anyone.

A little over 3 years ago I started doing alot of sub-contractor work for a web design company out of Ohio. As a sub-contractor I didn't have any say as to which hosting companies to use and just had to work on whatever servers they had their client set up on. The two main companies they used were GoDaddy and BlueHost.

GoDaddy is without a doubt the WORST hosting company that I have ever had to deal with. Their servers are extremely slow, many common services are not available, and if you want to run any kind of eCommerce then get ready for a headache. Most eCommerce programs out there have an alternate version of their code strictly for use on GoDaddy servers to "try" and overcome GoDaddy's lack of concern for their customer's needs.

BlueHost seemed like a decent hosting company at first. They offered alot of useful services at a really cheap price. And as a result they grew very fast. In fact they grew faster then they had the knowledge and ability to handle the business. We actually had to move our clients sites that we had set up there due to extremely poor performance. So I would not recommend these guys either.

Finally, I found the company that I use now not only for my own sites but for my clients sites as well. The company is called HostGator. I have had no performance issues whatsoever with them. They have a 99.999% uptime guarantee and they take that very seriously. They have 24/7 tech support by phone and live chat. I have only had to call tech support a couple of times and each time the problem ended up being on my end rather than their's but they were very helpful in tracking down the problem.

Their cPanel is very user friendly and the features and services that come with your account will accommodate everyone from the beginner who has no experience putting up a website to the advanced programmer who is creating a complex custom programmed site.

You can get hosting for as low as $8.95 a month if you want to pay month-to-month or as low as $4.95 if you pre-pay in advance. I can not say enough good things about these guys. After several years working in web development, this is the best hosing provider that I have seen. They have the most services, best reliability for the best price.

SCAM WARNING! - Google Bizkit

This post is a follow up to my last post entitled: "CONSUMER ALERT - Google BizKit".

Ok, I have been looking around at a large number of these sites offering information on how to make money with Google Adsense. They are almost all identical with slight variations. But they all have the hidden monthly charge that can range from $29.90 a month to $79.90 a month. And many of them are owned by the same people.

The bottom line is don't buy anything from anyone that claims to give you the "secrets" to making easy money with Google Adsense. If they really had any so-called secret formula then they would not have to trick you into a hidden monthly fee. None of these websites have any useful information whatsoever.

If you want to know if you can make any money with Google Adsense then go sign up for an Adsense account and put the code into your websites (they tell you how at Google). If your site or sites get alot of traffic then you will likely make some money. If they don't get any traffic then you won't. And paying someone $79.90 a month for them to give you the exact same information that you get from Google for free when you sign up for an account is not going to increase the amount of money you make.

Please use the email link below to send this blog to another you know that you think may fall victum to this scam should they happen to run across one of these sites!

Related Articles:

CONSUMER ALERT - Google BizKit
UPDATE - Google Bizkit
UPDATE - Google Bizkit - What to do if you are a Victim

CONSUMER ALERT - Google BizKit

After reading an online news story about a woman who supposedly makes over $5,500 online with Google AdSense, I followed a link in that story to a site that was suppose to show how this woman got started. It referred to something called Google BizKit and pointed to this URL https://www.internetmoneyengine.com/. (NOTE: This site is not associated with Google in any way shape or form)

Upon reviewing the website I found that they offered access to the information that I was seeking for a price of $1.95. I suspected that this would turn out to be completely useless information just like all of those recycled ebooks floating around the internet being sold by other scammers but I thought it was worth $1.95 to find out. As a Internet computer programmer by trade I carefully reviewed the site before making my purchase to ensure that there were not other hidden charges beyond the $1.95.

After I made my purchase and gained access to the website I found (as suspected) only useless information that can be obtained for free through any search engine, but that was ok, I understood that risk and was not upset about the $1.95.

But a few days later I noticed a charge to my bank account in the amount of $69.90 which I never authorized. When I contacted the company they told me that the $1.95 payment that I made was only for a 7 day trial and that I had agreed to a MONTHLY charge of $69.90 for access to their useless information.

I informed them that I never agreed to this nor was it ever presented to me on their website. Their website says NOTHING about a "trial period" nor does it say anything about further charges being made to your credit card. They refused to acknowledge the fraudulent nature of the charge and refused to refund it. I had to go to my bank and submit a dispute claim form which resulted in them "hot carding" my debit card so now I am without a debit card until a replacement is issued. And I have no idea on how long the dispute investigation will take either.

I went back to the website where I had originally made my $1.95 purchase and it took me (an internet programmer) a great deal of time and effort to find the small print and very well hidden disclaimer that says:

"By submitting this form I authorize Internet Money Engine to immediately charge my credit card for instant access to the Internet Money Machine. I hereby request that Internet Money Engine activate my account and authorize them to advance funds as indicated. Monthly Service fees will commences even days from the date of this purchase, and will be billed monthly thereafter. After the seven day trial you will be billed sixty nine dollars and ninety cents USD monthly for the continued access to the software. No refunds will be given for failure to use the requested and provided services. We reserve the right to transfer your billing to a third party Merchant of Record. This authority will remain in effect until revoked by me. You may cancel at anytime by writing to 368 Wrangler Road, Farmington UT 84025 or calling1-866-993-1415".

Now as I said, it took me a great deal of time and effort to locate this disclaimer when I was looking for it AFTER I had been ripped off. This disclaimer is not anywhere near the actual payment section where you make your $1.95 purchase nor is there any reference to it whatsoever. This disclaimer appears in the footer section of the site at the very bottom of the page. However, when you first go to the website it is not there...it changes to this once you begin the payment process with no indication that it has changed at all.

If fact, the site is programmed in such a way that it looks as though a small box on the top of the page has changed without reloading the page at all leading you to believe that no other information on the page has changed. It is clear that this has been done it such a way to prevent anyone from seeing this information so that nobody will ever know that they are about to be charged $69.90 a month!

Bottom Line: The small print text in the footer of the site on one page does not make what this site is doing legal in any way. You can not charge someone's credit card for any charge that has not been CLEARLY and prominently disclosed to them before a purchase commitment has been made.

The information contained in this website is not even worth the $1.95. It is certainly not worth even a one-time payment of $69.90 let alone a recurring monthly payment of $69.90.

The owner of this site obviously knows this or he would not be using such deceptive and illegal means to steal people's money from them. And this can only be described as theft!

Although it may be a bit embarrassing for me to admit that I actually fell for this scam, working in the profession that I do. I felt that I needed to do everything in my power to warn as many people as I could so others will not become a victum.

I created this blog to not only inform but to provide a space for others who have fell prey to this scam to comment and share there experiences as well.

In addition to taking action through my bank, I have also filed a formal complaint with my state's attorney General's office and I will be looking further into this site and others like it. I will post any progress and new information as I receive it. Follow this blog for updates.

Please use the email link below to send this blog to another you know that you think may fall victum to this scam should they happen to run across one of these sites!

Related Articles:

SCAM WARNING! - Google Bizkit
UPDATE - Google Bizkit
UPDATE - Google Bizkit - What to do if you are a Victim
